Move over Batman vs. Superman, there’s a new clash of superhero titans set to captivate the world! Superheros from two very different backgrounds, one of them is actually a real-life person, represent a battle of two seemingly conflicting world cultures
First, we have the mysterious woman known only as, The Burka Avenger. Who is she really, and how did she get such super powers from a seemingly average Burka?
The Burka Avenger is an award winning animated series created in Pakistan. She masks herself in a Burka to conceal her true identity, which is smart because most of the women there are already wearing Burkas so she can blend in, and fights the corrupt politicians and vicious mercenaries in her town of Halwapur. These villains have tried to shut down the local girls school, which she is a teacher at when she’s not wearing her mystical Burka, and together with her schoolchildren she fights the forces of evil who want to suppress women’s education (although I don’t think she attempts to take on the entire country of Saudi Arabia, one of the most oppressive regimes for women’s rights).
So what does the Burka Avenger use to fend off these intolerant villains? She is a master in the fighting style of, “Takht Kabadi”, a martial art that involves throwing books and pens. I am eager to see how her books and pens fair against AK-47s and suicide vests, but I guess I’ll have to wait until next season.
The main characters include three schoolchildren that attend her class and a pet goat named Golu. They defend the peaceful girls school against the villainous magician Baba Bandook, corrupt politician Vadero Pajero, and Jiya’s (the Burka Avenger) adoptive father Kabbadi Jan.
I’m thinking the evil magician above is the one with the gold snake on his head, adoptive father is in the checkered skirt (gender dysphoria?) and the wicked politician is the little guy with oddly European features.
No doubt these evil-doers seek to prevent women’s freedom and education, lest they learn that the entire history of their culture heavily relies upon the suppression of women’s rights.
Wondering when the Burka avenger will be available in your kid’s Saturday morning cartoon lineup? Well, I’m sure its not too far off from coming to American televisions based on the rave reviews its received from liberal media sources.
Burka Avenger received mainly positive reviews and praise for its female empowerment themes and also inspired many. Time magazine rated the show as one of the most Influential Fictional Characters of 2013. In an article on Burka Avenger, the Huffington Post stated that “Disney could learn a thing or two”. The Washington Post elaborated on this, stating “Pakistan’s new superhero makes the hoop-skirted, Prince Charming-obsessed Disney princesses look downright antiquated.
Move over Disney iconic princesses, there’s a new female role model in town! I can foresee a Cinderella remake coming up, only instead of a slipper being used by Prince Charming to identify his love (since showing a woman’s ankle would violate Islamic Sharia Law), it would be a Burka lost during Cinderella’s hasty retreat from the Sultan’s castle for being outdoors without a male relative escort. Makes perfect sense..Because every young American girl’s dream is to grow up and cover her entire body in a black Burka. I have no doubt we will eventually see our kids playing with Burka Avenger action figures and sporting trendy black Burkas of their own.
So who has risen to challenge the Burka Avenger for the title of ultimate cultural superhero?
None other than a local Bulgarian man named Dinko, The Migrant Hunter. A man who has taken it upon himself to patrol his country’s borders, rounding up illegal migrants and turning them in to local authorities.
Every good superhero has a back-story, and Dinko is no exception. Once a popular wrestling champion in Bulgaria, 30-year old Dinko has now become a national celebrity, thanks to his videos of him chasing down migrants while on his various all-terrain vehicles.
On February 18th, 2016, Anton Hekimyan, anchorman for the bTV morning news program, one of the most popular TV channels in Bulgaria, presented what he considered to be an exciting feature. The journalist opens saying: “Now we will talk about Dinko, a true super-hero”. What makes Dinko so special? Hekimyan quickly explains to the expectant TV audience that “Dinko combines extreme Quad driving with the hunting of migrants” and in a few months he has captured “at least twenty people with his bare hands.”
Dinko remains vigilant on the Turkey-Bulgarian border, and relates a recent story of how he thwarted a migrant attack:
“I was with a friend when suddenly a man appeared from behind the bushes. When he saw me he tried to push and hit me”, explained Dinko. Fortunately our super-hero quickly reacted and floored the man with two or three punches. He proved to be a Syrian refugee “wearing worn out shoes, jeans, a jacket and with a back pack”.
-Dinko, The Migrant Hunter (News Report)
While being interviewed by a popular television station in Bulgaria, Dinko describes how after this incident he was facing an entire group of migrants, including 11 men, who began acting aggressive. Dinko states, “But when they (the migrants) saw two or three of their group bleeding on the ground they became more reasonable.”
Like many superhero’s, some of the population sees Dinko as nothing more than a vigilante, operating outside the law and acting cruelly towards illegal migrants. Dinko has another perspective, he sees himself as a common man taking it upon himself to protect his country’s borders, and thinks his process should be encouraged.
According to Dinko, hunting migrants should be encouraged, regulated and should carry, “a reward, I don’t know, maybe 50 Leva (25 Euro) per head captured”. A true super-hero, however, Dinko is naturally not thinking of himself. “I would immediately give the money to the church”, he smiles assumingly in front of the friendly TV cameras. “Or else to the orphanage.”
How compassionate of Dinko, wanting to donate proceeds from his migrant hunting to local charities…
Dinko says, “No, you will not enter my country illegally with your rocks and stacks of wood.”
A recent survey showed that 84 per cent of the participants agreed with Valev’s way of migrant-patrolling. To top that, even their prime minister called his actions a service to the society.
In a public conference in March, Bulgarian PM Boyko Borisov asked the head of the border police to award him and his men for their “volunteer” service.
In his off hours, Dinko enjoys working on his Soviet-era Armored Troop Transport, making sure it’s in prime condition for migrant hunting. Imagine it in black, and you have the Bulgarian version of the Batmobile…
With the steady stream of Middle Eastern migrants flowing into European countries, showing no sign of stopping, will Dinko inspire others to follow his lead? The leaders of the EU certainly don’t seem to have the motivation to slow the migrant influx into their countries, in fact the German migration boss claims Germany needs MORE migrants, so will citizens take matter into their own hands? And what about the Burka Avenger, will she intervene and try to stop Dinko from preventing “peaceful” migrants from randomly crossing his country’s borders and setting up residence?
This would indeed be an epic battle. The Burka Avenger’s phenomenal skill in throwing books and pens at potential wrong-doers, against Dinko’s Soviet-era military equipment and hard-hitting wrestling abilities. Truly, no one could predict how this battle would end, but I’m sure it would be the battle of the century.
We may have to wait until Hollywood puts this challenge to the test on the big screen to ever discover the outcome of this legendary struggle, but in the meantime, we can only speculate what a battle between these superheroes would look like.
