It’s been a mere seven days since President Trump took the oath of office and already the country seems to be on a roller coaster of national security improvements with promises being fulfilled, something that has been unheard of in modern politics, and it looks like some politicians want to join this historic journey.
Even local politicians are jumping on the “Trump Train”, as Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez has ordered his county’s corrections department to detain illegal immigrants in order to comply with Trump’s new policy direction. Just this week Trump has stated he may be cutting federal funding to sanctuary cities that fail to uphold the law and detain illegal immigrants as they are discovered.
Fearing a loss of millions of dollars for defying immigration authorities, Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez on Thursday ordered county jails to comply with federal immigration detention requests — effectively gutting the county’s position as a “sanctuary” for immigrants in the country illegally.
Gimenez cited an executive order signed Wednesday by President Donald Trump that threatened to cut federal grants for any counties or cities that don’t cooperate fully with Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Since 2013, Miami-Dade has refused to indefinitely detain inmates who are in the country illegally and wanted by ICE — not based on principle, but because the federal government doesn’t fully reimburse the county for the expense.
“In light of the provisions of the Executive Order, I direct you and your staff to honor all immigration detainer requests received from the Department of Homeland Security,” Gimenez wrote Daniel Junior, the interim director of the corrections and rehabilitation department, in a brief, three-paragraph memo.
In response to Mayor Gimenez’s order to effectively end his sanctuary city status, President Trump sent out a congratulatory tweet commending his proactive action and complimented him for being “Strong!”

Although many mayor’s of liberal cities are holding their liberal ground, particularly Mayor Bill De Blasio of NYC who swears he will defy Trump’s immigration orders, it seems not every politician is eager to throw away millions in federal funding to protect people who have broken the law.
Mayor Carlos Gimenez, however, sees the writing on the wall and has not only stayed one step ahead of the game, but has also gained the attention and admiration of the President of the United States Donald Trump. The handful of mayors who seem determined to go down with the sinking illegal immigration ship may find themselves very alone in the coming months, and also broke when they no longer have the federal gravy train flowing millions into their social justice projects.
