A woman in Maine, who happens to be a passionate supporter of President Donald Trump, is taking a stand against local municipal authorities demanding she removes her pro-Trump yard signs from her property.
Susan Reitman, a 75-year-old woman living in Rockland, has proudly displayed signs on the fence surrounding her yard that have phrases such as “I love Trump” and “He Won, Get Over It” printed on them. A local code enforcement officer in Rockland states he was notified by a “concerned resident” that Reitman’s pro-Trumps signs were in violation of an ordinance that states that her 3 foot by 2 foot displays are larger than the town’s 2-sq-foot sign limit.
The officer said another Rockland resident complained about the size of the signs. The city ordinance states residential signs can be no larger than two square feet.
Reitman’s signs are a little larger than three feet by two feet.
She could be fined between $100 to $1,000 per day if she doesn’t remove the signs by Friday.
However, Reitman said she has no intention of removing her signs — or paying any fines.
I’d wager the nearby resident who felt the need to contact local authorities because of a woman’s yard signs is not a fan of Donald Trump, and is perhaps triggered each time they have to drive by Reitman’s patriotic signs. I can imagine this resident pouring over pages of local town ordinance, desperate to find any obscure rule that they could use to crush Reitman’s display of support for America’s president.
Reitman, however, is not backing down and told New England Cable News that she’s willing to “sit in jail for the rest of eternity” in defense of her free speech rights.
‘If I have to sit in jail for the rest of eternity, that’s my choice,’ she said.
Town officials say there’s a process to apply for permits to display larger signs.
Reitman said she wasn’t aware of the ordinance and feels it should be changed to allow for this kind of political speech.
Local Assistant Code Officer Bill Butler said Reitman has until Friday to remove the signs or face fines ranging from $100 to $1000 a day.
Reitman has no plans to either pay fines or remove her pro-Trump signs, however, as she firmly believes the ordinance violates her right to free speech and expression.
“I guess I’m being stubborn … but I’m not going to back down from what I believe, I was shocked.” she said. “This is my freedom of speech. People have a right to voice their opinion.”
I can’t help but wonder if the resident who first reported Reitman to the authorities for having signs that are slightly bigger than allowed feels bad for forcing a 75-year-old woman to choose between betraying her right to free speech and finding herself in jail for standing up for what she believes in, but then I remember that anti-Trump leftists have no capacity for remorse, at least when it comes to those who disagree with them politically.
Some may believe that Rietman should comply with local ordinances and replace her pro-Trump signs with smaller versions, but in reality her making a stand is about much more than simple political signs. Rather, her firm position is equivalent to taking a stand against the anti-Trump forces in America who wish to stifle support for the president, as well as free speech itself, forcing others to act and believe in a way which aligns with left-wing agendas…or else face vicious punishment.
I wonder why I never hear about anyone being persecuted for displaying pro-Hillary, pro-Obama or pro-liberal agenda signs, regardless of their size or if they align with local ordinances?
