This election year, Donald Trump has leveraged social media like no other presidential candidate before him, and he may very well write the playbook on this strategy for future elections to come.
Reddit, a massive social network composed of millions of users all over the world, has been one of the most fiercely contested areas for Trump supporters. The creator of The_Donald, a user that went by the name CisWhiteMalestrom, was even forced off of his own group by malicious individuals who obtained his real life personal information and threatened to make it public unless he resigned.
And just recently, a moderator of the Subreddit r/politics, which is suppose to be for the discussion of anything politically related regardless of party affiliation, has had their moderator status permanently suspended simply for voicing his support of Donald Trump.
Yes, it seems even in the virtual world Donald Trump supporters are not safe from aggressive attacks by “peaceful” protesters.
Despite all odds being stacked against them, The_Donald continues to fight forward, brining daily news, memes (viral messages) and humorous content to the users of Reddit. And today, they hit 200,000 registered subscribers to their Donald Trump supporting sub-reddit.
What makes this sub-Reddit, the term for a group on Reddit, truly unique is its completely organic origins on a social network that is largely liberal. It’s no secret that the majority of Reddit users identify as liberal, and there has been a constant backlash against The_Donald from various other groups on this site. One method of attacking is called “brigading” that involves members of other groups constantly down-voting The_Donald’s posts so that they are suppressed from the front page. The fight continues, however, as the Donald Trump supporters on Reddit are more passionate than ever.
This passionate online community of The_Donald is a massive advantage for Trump and one that any political candidate would pay big bucks for. I was surprised by the resolve and excitement of their community as well as their unwavering dedication to the cause, which goes to show you the level of enthusiasm that Trump voters have this year.
Reddit isn’t the only social network that Donald Trump has a large fan base in, however, as recent statistics show he leads across the board in all the popular social websites. If social media subscribers can determine the winner of the presidential election, then Donald Trump will win in a landslide.
