I have to hand it to the Swiss, they are obviously more capable of instituting common sense laws that most other countries in the Western world. Recently, Switzerland decided they would deny citizenship to any immigrants who refused to assimilate and now they are enforcing another law aimed at specific outside cultural trait. Now, they are taking a stand in a Swiss canton (a specific area in Switzerland, like a state) and giving out fines for anyone who violates this burka ban.
I’m sure liberals would say that this policy inhibits diversity and is cruel, but apparently its alright for Muslim countries to institute similar bans in their territory. I can’t go and build a Christian church in Saudi Arabia, its banned. If you are a woman in Saudi Arabia, you have to wear a burka and be escorted by a male relative whenever you leave your place of residence. So if I wanted to live in Saudi Arabia I would have to follow their rules, which stifles any diversity that conflicts with Islam or Sharia law, but I never see any liberals speaking out against these strict laws in the Middle East.
The Telegraph reports:
A new burka ban has been enforced in a Swiss canton, with two people already being fined for defying it.
A Swiss woman, who has converted to Islam, and a French-Algerian businessman publically opposed the ban in the city of Locarno in the canton of Tessin were both fined when the new rule came into effect last Friday.
Nora Illi, a member of the Islamic Central Council Switzerland, purposefully defied the ban last Friday and was fined by police officers.
She was stopped alongside Rachid Nekkaz, a political activist. Mr Nekkaz was fined 200 Swiss francs (£160). Ms Illi faces a fine of between 100 and 10,000 Swiss francs (£80 – £8,000), Swiss Info reported.
More than 65 per cent of voters approved the ban in a referendum in the canton in 2013.
The Saudi Arabian embassy in Bern warned its citizens visiting Switzerland about the ban.
“The embassy wishes to emphasise that the Ticino cantonal authorities in south eastern Switzerland have announced that as of July 1, 2016 they will start to enforce the burka (niqab) ban in public places in the canton, including in Lugano, Locarno, Magadino, Bellinzona, Ascona and Mendrisio,” the embassy wrote on Twitter.
“As school holidays [in Saudi Arabia] are coming up, the embassy reminds all honorable citizens of the necessity to respect and conform to Swiss rules and regulations in order avoid all problems.”
